Comparison - Viviane Isringhaus
At first I didn’t notice anything that Krems on the Danube and my hometown Monheim on the Rhine had in common. But if you look again, there is an essential commonality already in the name, both cities are located on a river.

The two rivers, the Danube and the Rhine, are among the ten largest rivers in Europe. In addition, both rivers flow through Germany and Austria. So in theory I could just go home by boat or maybe even swim, but that would be more than 1,500 km in total. And by boat it would total to almost a month long trip due to the many locks.
Now let me briefly compare a few facts of the two rivers:
Danube:
-
2845 km
-
lowest point: 130 m
-
broad: 3 to 28 km
-
flow speed: 6 km per hour
-
10 Countries (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Ukraine, Romania, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Moldova, Croatian)

Rhine:
-
1320 km
-
lowest point: 32 m deep
-
broad: 100 to 800m
-
flow speed: 13 km per hour
-
6 Countries (Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Netherlands)

With 2845 km, the Danube is the longest river in both countries.
Followed by the Rhine which is not even half as long.
The Rhine flows through 6 different countries (Germany, Austria of course and France, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, and the Netherlands) and also flows into the North Sea.
The Danube, on the other hand, flows through 10 countries (Germany and Austria, Hungary, Ukraine, Slovakia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Moldova, Croatia and Romania), which is more than any other river in the world, and flows into the Black Sea.
Both have an important economic benefit, since together they can reach many European countries and thus also supply them.
The lowest point in the Rhine is 32m deep where the Danube reaches 130 m, which is more than 4 times as deep and the widest part of the Rhine is 4 times smaller than just the narrowest part of the Danube (and about 35 times smaller than the widest part).
The only part that the Rhine can beat the Danube in is speed and it is more than twice as fast.
Despite their differences, both rivers are beautiful and bring a lot of nature with them.
Both rivers offer wonderful activities like nice walks along the river, watching sunrises and more...
