Jumilla and Krems are quite different, but they do have some things in common.

Jumilla is a municipality of about 26,000 people in the north of Murcia, Spain. Wine from Jumilla has been recognized, both nationally and internationally, for it's taste. The tradition dates back to Iberian times when the Greeks imported large quantities of wine. A Greek wine amphora was actually discovered in Coimbra del Barranco Ancho.
Georgians discovered, by luck, that burying grape juice underground for the winter created a whole new and unique beverage. Although they were the first to discover this, they're not the only ones to have done it. Today wine making, which is also known as vinification, has become a science. Many elements affect the end product of wine, such as: region, climate, and the techniques used. Through the lens of wine, we'll compare both Jumilla and Krems.
Krems, in lower Austria has 24,000 inhabits and It's wine making traditions refers back to the Middle Ages from Roman and Celtic times to Paleolithic era.
Both Jumillan and Krems’ wine production are both produced manually. However, the climate is rather different. In Krems an der Donau, summers are much warmer than the winters, which are cold and snowy. And often times it's rather cloudy year round. The average temperature varies between -3°C and 25°C. In the photo to the right you can see the vineyard I visited on September 29th. On the other hand, Jumillan’s summers are short and hot, with mostly clear skies. Winters are long, windy and cold but it's dry throughout the whole year. The average temperature varies between 1°C and 33°C.
This has produced a wide variety of wines. In the wineries of Kremser Weinhauer, Buschenchenken we can have white ones such as Grüner Veltliner and Riesling or red ones like Blauer Zweigelt y Blauer Portugieser. Meanwhile, Jumilla has specialized in red wine. The best ones are Luzón, Olivares and Éxodo Roble.
